CONGRESBURY Millennium Green trustees were delighted to finally hand over responsibility for the administration of the Green to the Parish Council. The move follows five years of negotiations and a rigorous due diligence exercise.
Current trustees, the present chairman of the council, Martin Lang, and past chairman, Pete Sewell, signed legal documents at a meeting of the parish council on February 13.
Once ratified by English Heritage, the Council will become corporate trustees of the Green. The five outgoing trustees expressed their delight and relief that this wonderful village amenity will now have a permanent place in the community.

PARISH councillors in Congresbury have agreed to increase their contribution to youth services in the village to offset the cuts imposed by North Somerset. In the past, North Somerset has contributed £20,000, but next year this has been slashed to £6,300. Congresbury parish council approved a grant of £25,000, which will ensure that the youth club in the village will continue to operate, but the youth service to Moorland Park will be curtailed. Talks are now taking place to consider merging the youth club, which has been funded by North Somerset, with Congresbury Youth Partnership, which has been maintained by parish funding.

GUESTS from W.I. branches in the area visited Congresbury Evening W.I. to help celebrate its 26th birthday last week. Entertainment was provided by Professor Peter Milsom, a Punch and Judy man, who performs several days a week in the summer on Weymouth beach. He took some of his puppets to the meeting and Mr. Punch did the rounds among members. Every year he adds new puppets to his repertoire and new costumes are made. Members were reminded that a coffee morning will be held on Saturday, March 10 in Congresbury Methodist Hall and are asked to donate cakes and gifts for the tombola.

CANDLE making has proved to be one of the many hidden talents of Rev. Tim Erridge, curate of St. Andrew’s Church, Congresbury, who demonstrated his skills to about 30 children and parents before the annual Christingle service. With hot wax and cold water, candles can be produced in about five minutes and the procedure is safe enough that even three-year-old Matilda Hogarth could take part. About 70 children, parents and grandparents took part in the Christingle service, led by Tim, who explained the significance of the traditional oranges, studded with sweets and topped with a candle. Cardboard candles, which had been filled with coins by the children, were returned to the church and over £100 was donated to the Children’s Society. The afternoon finished with refreshments, organised by Jean Shawcross.

DIZZY heights were seen by Congresbury Over 60’s club last week when Chris Holloway gave a splendid talk, with graphic illustrations, about the Grand Canyon. Starting off in Las Vegas, with slides of the wedding chapel and various restaurants serving superb food, he moved on to spectacular views of the Grand Canyon and the Colorado River. The escarpments were magnificent and bathed in different colours at various times of the day. Wildlife consisted mainly of chipmunks, squirrels and deer, with some mountain lions, but disappointingly no eagles. The list of summer coach trips will be handed out at the next meeting.

NATIONAL volunteer week in the summer will be recognised in Congresbury with a day’s event, organised by Diana Hassan, showing all the volunteer groups in the village and encouraging villagers to take part.

BOOKS galore and a wide selection of jigsaw puzzles, videos and CD’s at the Book Sale in Congresbury War Memorial Hall on Saturday, 9am-1pm.
