AMAZING result was announced by Jackie Hampson that the
Mendip Friends support group, which covers Congresbury and
the surrounding villages, raised £20,000 for the Children’s
Hospice Southwest last year. She reported this at the Soup
and Puds lunch in Congresbury Methodist Hall, which
attracted over 60 customers and raised £400 for the Hospice.
Jackie thanked the helpers, who donate all the food for the
lunches, and the hard working committee who produce such
sterling results. The next Soup and Puds lunch will be on Wednesday, March 14, at 12 noon (last orders 1.15pm) in Congresbury Methodist Hall.New members always welcome, contact Jenny Loach on (01934)-834420 The celebrated Congresbury Scout and Guide Group Burns Night Supper. First held 35 years ago, will be held on Saturday, February 4 at the Scout Hut in Congresbury. There will be a traditional meal including haggis and neeps. Live piping will be provided by Geoff Pegler and Dave Byett will be calling the Scottish dances. No dancing skills are required – it’s all good fun. There will be an address to the haggis plus short speeches from lads and lasses. Tickets £17 from Jackie Fox 01934 876856. COINS collected for friendship by Evening W.I. members form the basis of a charity to help developing countries and this was the basis of the talk given by Libby Lockyer, a W.I. Federation officer, when she addressed Congresbury Evening W.I. last week. The W.I. is affiliated to the Associated Country Women of the World, which offers support and practical help for food production, water supply, education and training in health and nutrition. On Wednesday, February 8 at 7.45pm in Congresbury Methodist Hall, the W.I. branch birthday will be celebrated, with special Punch & Judy entertainment, and guests have been invited from other W.I.s in the area. Members have been asked for tombola gifts and cakes for the cake stall for a coffee morning on Saturday, March 10 in Congresbury Methodist Hall. MEMBERS of Congresbury Over 60’s Club enjoyed an afternoon of bright and bouncy tunes from Mike and his Music. Welcome to my World, Hello Mary Lou, Green Door and a host of favourite songs from performers such as Elvis, Cliff Richard and Tom Jones set toes tapping throughout the hall. Members agreed that they had enjoyed a most entertaining afternoon with such a burst of sunshine on a rather gloomy and wet day. At the meeting on 7th February Chris Holloway will give a talk on the Grand Canyon and on 21st February the well known traveller Bernard Tapp will give a talk on his visit to Annapurna and it is also hoped that the list of summer outings will be ready to hand out to members. CHILDREN, with parents and grandparents, are invited to join in the traditional celebration of Christingle on Sunday, Februry 5 at 4pm in St. Andrew's church, Congresbury. A real family occasion marked with candles and oranges studded with sweets. Everyone welcome. Proceeds to the Children's Society. |
